Quote: its not the size of the fish for the tank..its the tank for the fish...
About Yourself: grew up with fish, getting in the hobby now just recently.the fish brighten up my rooms and i always want to try something new or find room and a reason for more...
Fish Kept: african cichlids are the "smartest fish"-[quote from animal planet's-mutant planet] and right away you will know why... beautiful, smart, and thousands of varieties make them a favorite to keep and breed. do yourself a favor and check them out sooner or later... you will be glad you did.
Corals/Plants: lower light varieties anubias java fern moss ball amazon sword baby tears
Tank Size: 55 gallons
Advice: learn as much as you can before you commit...care for all the fish's needs and their environment keep only compatable species together- sometimes it is trial and error...doesnt hurt to start small and work as you go, you will alwzays want to try new things and upgrade anyway...filtration and water changes are critical. feed a variety of foods not just flake or pellets. quarentine new fish. spend time watching so you know whats going on, if something changed ,or for the enjoyment... work up to that saltwater tank you are dreaming about...its alot more than just adding marine salt!

Quote: "Only bad things happen quickly in a reef tank." --a very patient man
About Yourself: Stumbled into a marine fish shop, picked out a couple pieces of rock, a damsel, crab, shrimp and feather duster; when the guy rung me up and told me my total was $160 I literally thought he was kidding. It took about thirty seconds of him staring at me with a straight face for me to get that it was not a joke. It has been all downhill ever since ;)
Fish Kept: breeding ocellaris clown pair (2 years), juvenile ocellaris, peppermint shrimp, 6 blue leg hermits, 2 scarlet yellow face hermits, 3 astrea snails (stocking 1 per gallon is a sure recipie for starving snails!), 3 nassarius snails, misc hitchiker snails which breed constantly, and one bumblebee snail which I have had since I began the hobby in June of '03. I think he will never die.
Corals/Plants: green sinularia, pink kenya tree, finger leather, pink anthelia, brown button polyps, green ricordea, green star polyps
Tank Size: 14 gallons
Advice: Stock your tank according to how much time money and effort you want to invest in your reef. I have fallen into the trap of buying animals that need to be fed specialized diets or that need frequent feedings when my time wont allow it (or my tank can't process the resulting amount of waste efficiently!) If you arent going to do the required maintenance to keep the water just so for the animals then don't buy the animals that are high maintenance (anemones, sps, etc) You can do a reef that is fairly low in cost and very low maintenance if you do not overstock. And don't think that overstocking or overfeeding won't catch up with you in a bad way! Be patient, let your tank achieve its own balance slowly; don't just throw it all in and hope it all works together. Reading about this hobby is vital, but it is also fascinating and fun and you will feel good about "knowing before you go." Take your aquarium books with you when shopping for new purchases; this will help you avoid impulse/inappropriate purchases. And buy the best equipment your budget will allow or else I guarantee you will be buying twice.

About Yourself: My dad first started my interest when I was 10 and he bought me my first tank. It was freshwater and I loved breeding guppies and swordfish. Fish Kept: My critters: 2 firefish gobies they are a mated pair. A six-line wrasse. A mean little skunkback psuedochromis. A true percula clown mated to a false percula clown. My odd couple. A bi-color angel. A yellow-tail damsel. A pixy hawkfish. A scotter blenny. I have 1 anemone crab lives on a rock anemone. 1 urchin crab. 2 blue legged hermit crabs. 1 coral-banded shrimp and a few snails.
Corals/Plants: Corals : Frogspaw which the clowns are hosting in. Torch coral. Orange/golden acropora. Plating montipora. Neon green candy cane coral and blue center candycane coral. Spiny pectinia coral. A beautiful piece of neon green coral that appears to be encrusting. Hawaian fetherduster. Tan and green neon kenya tree. Toadstool leather and an umbrella leather. Advice: Read read read. Then find someone with experience and pick their brain. Listen to what worked for them and what didnt. Through it all you will still learn the most from trial and error but you can save a lot of time and money by listening to veteran aquarists.
