Advice:
Always research the fish you want to keep, don't think you can upgrade over night, plan ahead. If your wife says no, get her involved, she'll come around. The internet is a great resource....over use it!!
If you want a full look try using a good backdrop so you can leave you fish plenty of room to swim.

About Yourself:
To start I'm a fisherman. One day in college I thought, "Hey it would be cool to watch these guys in a tank!" But, if you know anything about walleye, they are not that pretty and prefer colder waters. So I got a tank and got some fishes that were more suited for aquarium life. To this day it has yet to stop entertaining me!
Fish Kept:
6 African Cichlids, 1 Pleco +12"
Corals/Plants:
All plastic... it's an aquarium not a garden
Tank Size:
55 gallons
Advice:
Start with something easy then once you got the hang of it work your way up to more exotic fish. Don’t start with a 10 gallon unless you have to. Spend the more and invest in a bigger tank that will last longer. So then when you do understand how to run an aquarium you can get that cool exotic fish you saw in the pet shop.
P.S. Cleaning them sucks after while, but in the end you will have a much healthier tank
