About Yourself: My name is Michael Johnson and I live in Sunny Orange County California. I'm a recent graduate of the University of California Irvine with a BA in Economics, and plan on further study in accounting. I currently do not have a job, but I suppose this gives me more time to spend on my aquariums! I got into aquascaping, I guess through my brother the biologist, who is really into tropical plants. Growing up I've always loved nature, and an aquarium is a good way to create a mini habitat that will beautify your home. There is a certain feeling a joy and accomplishment when you work so hard to establish a functioning micro-ecosystem and everything works together. I think more people should get into the aquarium hobby because it will cause us to appreciate nature on a new level, and to perhaps move towards generations that care about the planet and the inevitable global warming predicament. Goal for the future: set up a 155 gallon reef tank
Fish Kept: Fish: A pair of Fundulopanchax Gardneri (Killifish), Four Macrotocinclus affinis (Oto Cat), Two Corydoras paleatus (peppered Cory Cat)
Corals/Plants: Plants: My tank is mostly made up of microsorum pteropus and other types of java fern, grown on drift wood. Other plants are; Vesicularia dubyana or Java Moss(grown on drift wood), Acorus variegatus or Dwarf Green Acorus (Japanese Fan Grass), Riccia fluitas (Riccia) aka Crystalwort, Pelia (grown on drift wood), Cryptocoryne x willisii or Nevillii Crypt, Anubias nana or Dwarf Anubias, Echinodorus x Ozelot or Ozelot sword plant which is a hybrid between Echinodorus schlueteri 'Leopard' and Echinodorus barthii, Myriophyllum pinnatum or Myrio Green, Rotala macranda or Rotala Magenta (turns red with iron in the water), Ceratopteris thalictroides or Water Sprite aka Indian fern (also called water fairy), and lastly Vesicularia montagnei or Christmas Moss (which is one of my favorites because it is bright green in color)
Tank Size: 25 gallons
Advice: Number one rule is to never give up. I would recommend doing your research and planning first before any water goes into the tank such as; location of the tank (not a sunny room), size of tank, what kind of fish/plants/coral you want to keep. Look at the forums on this site!

Corals/Plants: Anubias Java Fern on Bog Wood Vallisneria Ludwigia Hornwort
Tank Size: 85 gallons
Advice: Been keeping fish for about 2 years. Make sure you do weekly water changes and check for water parameters are in safe levels. Buy a tank big enough for the fish as they grow. Also research fish so you don't get major aggression issues. I have 3 snoody mid-sized cichlids. They all get along alright, except the Green Texas Cichlid gets chased around a lot.

About Yourself: I purchased my tank some 12 years ago as a means of providing light to find my way in to my home after work usually late and in the dark . I started with african cicklids and 2 jack dempsy's which were supposed to be jewell cichlids . I first recieved them at about 1 1/2 " long they lived 10 years reashing a length of over 1 ' after a period of silver dollars to fill the tank I started over with a planted tank and small schooling fish
Fish Kept: harlequin rasboras ,white cloud minnows, sword tails, black neon tetras ,amano shrimp ,blueberry shrimp, angel fish , 1 flame gourami , 2 dwarf frogs and a bunch of little snails will be adding some cardinal tetras after next water change
Corals/Plants: cryptocarns , dwarf sag , mexican oat ? i am not sure for $45 the local fish monger gave me a bucket full of plants most of which I was able to stuff into my tank
Tank Size: 74 gallons
Advice: if in doubt do a water change 25 % once a week is better than 50 % once a month

Rated #130: 55 Gallons Planted Tank

Rated #130: 55 Gallons Planted Tank - This is a 55 gal tank.
uses malaysian driftwood, volcanic rocks and real low light plants.
Gravel on top of substrate,no co2,1.45 w/gal.

2/8/06 updated with a little better picture.

added more plants like the pearlgrass in the foreground not sure how they will grow, may need more light intensity ,will see..

I try my best to keep the scale of the tank wide and open, also accordingly I select fish of somewhat smaller size to populate it.

I get tempted to replace the rock set up with a wooden branch and moss attached to it.

Thxs for watching.

About Yourself: Euro dude in hawaii ,after getting me addicted to music and vinyl record my buddy got me interested to the fish world. I enjoy relaxing and watching my fish enjoying life. Planning someday to upgrade to a wider tank likely a 75 or 90 gal tank maybe. Also I may upgrade to a better light set up and perhaps co2 to increase the plants option. My fear is having the tank leak on me while I am away........lol.
Fish Kept: 1 clown loach 1 red tail shark 1 long fin swordtail 1 albino long fin bristle nose pleco 3 angel fish 2 cory 12 harlequin rasbora 15 neon tetra
Corals/Plants: low light plants and gradually expanding with more. 1) water wisteria 2) anubias nana 3) anubias barberi 3) anubias minima 4) java fern 5) pearl grass (teardrop) 6) sagittaria subulata 7) cryptocorine red edge (not really an aquarium plant but it is pretty) 8) hemianthus micranthemoides 9) rotala indica
Tank Size: 55 gallons
Advice: "do not eat your fish even if money is tight." Patience,Filtration and water change is key to success at keeping fish happy,I do ~20 % every week, trying out flourish excel product to combat some algae. Did try excel and it works great. change filters every 4 to 6 weeks etc.. I will say I never tested the water but none of my fish ever died yet.
