"A strange twilight world opened up before me, and I felt as the first man to set foot on another planet, an intruder in this mystic garden of the deep." - Professor Pierre Aronnax, narrator for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea
About Yourself:
I'm an artist and designer here in Austin, TX. I found a love of underwater life while doing some beginner scuba diving... I was at my friend Mark's office not too long ago, and he had this KILLER fish tank with some beautiful fish. The water was so clean, and the landscape he made was so balanced.. and no funky smell that i remembered from my childhood in the 70's.
"It's all about good filtration. Get an Eheim" he said. He told me about how little you have to clean out the tank, etc etc. I was sold.
So here I am a couple of weeks later.. and we just dropped our first fish in my first tank ever!
Woohoo!
Fish Kept:
Semi-Aggressive Community Tank:
So Far...
5 Large Tiger Barbs;
3 Red Tail Sharks
2 Placostemus
2 Pearl Angel Fish
Soon...
Loaches
Corals/Plants:
all cool-looking plants, but nothing is living, alas....
Tank Size:
72 gallons
Advice:
Get a friend who knows what they're doing to help you set it up, and walk you through the first month. I've learned so much.
Description:
So this is our first tank... My kids and my wife all sat down and decided that we would go down the 'Land of the Lost' path, complete with glowy crystals and some tropical-looking plants.
My friends Mark and Bri helped us set it up... Mark brought over some rocks and some extra plants he had... and a quick trip to Amazonia, Rivers and Reefs, and Aquatek (all here in Austin) rounded out the rest of the landscape. Our daughter (whose name is Pearl) picked out the the 'talking' clamshell with a pearl inside.
Mark is a talented landscape designer by trade, and my wife Carrie also is a garden designer.. so between the two of them, plus Bri's passion for fish (and the kid's keen eye for good dinosaurs), we think it turned out well enough to show.. what do you think?
We just got started, so there are only 7 fish in the tank... it's kind of nice because it seems like they're able to roam free and be happy.. we might go for only a few more.. to keep it feeling open.... but who knows? (I hear it's a sickness.)

About Yourself:
My grandma had an oscar that had a personality that wouldn't quit. My dad had three tanks when I was growing up and I have always wanted one myself, but couldn't see spending money on fish when I had rent to pay. Three years ago, my son surprised me for Mother's Day with a 5 gallon starter tank. I cried! Since then, I replaced the five gallon with a ten gallon tank and have recently added the 29 gallon. Eventually, I want a reef tank.
Fish Kept:
2 Silver Scats
1 Green Spotted Scat
3 Monos
6 Tiger Barbs
1 Pleco
Corals/Plants:
I have all silk plants, they look the best. I also have a piece of driftwood.
Tank Size:
29 gallons
Advice:
Do your research and don't just take the word of a saleperson at your local pet supply store.
Description:
29 gallon, brackish water fish tank with scats, monos, tiger barbs (yes, they all get along) and a pleco.
