About Yourself:
50 yr. old male. Retired/disabled truck driver. Been into the hobby off and on for about 25 yrs. Some really nice set-ups here. I got a lot of good ideas for my tank.
Fish Kept:
Convicts, Australian Rainbows, 2 Jack Dempseys, Black Skirt Tetras, Texas Cichlids, Striped Raphael Catfish and 1 unknown Cichlid. I know I have too many fish, but my old tank started leaking and I only had the cash for this tank! Planning on getting at least a 75gal. tank in the near future.
Corals/Plants:
Fake plants. Sandstone and slate from landscape supply.
Tank Size:
45 gallons
Advice:
Get as large a tank as you can afford because you'll just end up getting a bigger one later. I get alot of my equipment (filters, air pumps etc.) from garage sales. I paid less than $30.00 for my filters! Also, things like decorative rock and substrate can be purchased at landscape supply for very cheap. I also saved quite a bit of cash by making my stand and hood myself.
Description:
45gal tall, sandstone rock structure, crushed granite substrate($10 for 80 pounds at landscape supply), Undergravel jets for good water movement. Way too many fish in tank, overrun w/baby Convicts! I have a massive amount of filtration so my PH, Ammonia levels etc. are always good. If anybody can tell me what the big fish at the left side of the tank is, i'd really like any opinions!

About Yourself:
I live and work in Niagara Falls, Canada. My boyfriend and I have had this 30 gallon up for two years with an over hanging filter but had a lot of algae. We recently tested out this new system and saw great results within days. It wasn't too expensive and required just a little bit of pvc, an extra tank and some plexiglass. The pump was the most expensive thing. The whole thing might be overkill, but it's been way easier to maintain and it seems good practice for the salt water tank we hope to set up in the future.
Fish Kept:
I'm currently housing one Malawi cichlid (cobalt blue/female??) in a community and yes I know it's ill advised. She's grown to about 2 inches and the pack of 5 red minor tetras keeps her out of hiding and more active. I have a sixth tetra currently regrowing some fins in the reservoir. Other than her and two other initial losses, the fish seem to have found a balance.
We've just added three guppies and have had some hiccups there. Two seem quite happy there now, with 1 return to the pet store, and a beautiful teal recuperating in the refugium with the tetra.
Corals/Plants:
I also have some plants. A couple of wendtii, a cobomba, and one other of which I don't know the type. I'm hoping to add more in the future.
Tank Size:
30 gallons
Advice:
Look into sump filtration. It needs more space but it has sure been beneficial for me. Check out the L.A. fishguy on youtube for an interesting opinion on caring for fishtanks. ;)
Description:
I think this cobalt is female, but her name's Mario. All of the minors took a month to come into there full colour. Pet store fish look terrible....

About Yourself:
Getting back into the hobby hard with my new Amazon biotope tank.... I started out around 1995 and have generally had a tank most of the time since, with some breaks every now and then.
Fish Kept:
8 Serpae Tetras, 2 Cory cats, 1 pleco.
More to follow as tank ages...
Corals/Plants:
Fake plastic for now. Will add Amazon swords, moss and some low grasses eventually.
Tank Size:
55 gallons
Advice:
Go slow, read read, read. But go as big as you can (tank size) afford. Add fish slowly, and feed fish less than you think.
