About Yourself:
Got a tank after I saw my mates malawi tank and it blew my mind! Kept two goldfish in a bowl before but this is my first attempt otherwise. NOT ONE SINGLE FATALITY YET!!! I love nature and science, I love malawis, they have such great personality and looks, but you need lots of them and a big tank with lots of filtration. When you design a tank I think it should all be about the fish - clean, interesting environment = happy fish = happy fishkeeper and fishkeeper's beautiful wife! I'm a doctor from Southampton UK, my lovely wife was initially sceptical about the tank but she now loves it and the fish - especially napoleon!
Fish Kept:
Demasoni Cichlid, Red Zebra Cichlid, Borleyi Cichlid, Orange Blossom Peacock Cichlid, Rainbow Shark, Sailfin Pleco (L-83), Cobalt Blue Zebra Cichlid, Sulphur Head Peacock, Blue Peacock Cichlid, Electric Yellow Cichlid, Strawberry Peacock Cichlid, Synodontis Catfish, Red Peacock Cichlid
Corals/Plants:
valisneria, java fern, amazon sword, green cabomba (nearly destroyed by napoleon, my bad tempered cobalt blue!), water trumpet and others yet to be identified!
Tank Size:
50 gallons
Advice:
test water quality often
Do your research first - it's a steep learning curve
know your nitrogen cycle
DO NOT OVERFEED!!!! know your fish species what they like and what other species you can safely keep with them
change water and vacuum gravel/sand frequently
be very careful when cleaning your filter, bacteria are usually a good thing algae are not too bad either but know your nitrogen/phosphorus ratios
removing blue green algae will just encourage more to grow, stick it down your filter to decay and improve your NP ratio
lights on a timer 10 hours optimum to keep algae down
I try to keep my nitrates around 5-15, 5 is about normal in nature
plecos, synodontis spp., freshwater sharks and malawis are a good combination generally, but malawis get on better with each other when they are a bit overcrowded, they like a highish pH also, coral can sometimes be a good idea, and lots of caves as well
Plants that go well with malawis - valisneria, java fern, amazon sword
PLANTS ARE GREAT THINGS FOR THE FISH!!! you can never have too many plants, and they elevate your tank to an almost ethereal level :-)
plecos like a small amount of wood
get a long piece of hosing for your gravel cleaner - saves carrying heavy buckets!
Careful with mbunas - they are aggressive little blighters
You do not/should not need to take your rocks out to clean them

sorry for poor quality! I will try and upload more soon....

About Yourself:
I first started with a 10GL freshwater planted aquarium that was a gift. Bought a 29GL freshwater planted, then recently bought a 55GL freshwater planted and made the 29GL into marine. So far i have done a good job without any CO2, but I want my plants to do better, so I am looking into a pressurized system. Its a lot of money, but worth it from what I have read everywhere. Between this tank and my saltwater they just drain my money, but I'm sure i can fish out about $200 sometime in the next month or so.
Fish Kept:
Gold and regular tetras, Otocinclus, Dwarf puffer fish, Marble and Ghost Shrimp, neons, serpae tetras, and recently some electric green glo fish.
Corals/Plants:
Driftwood, Swords, Anacharis, Moss Ball, Dwarf Hairgrass, Anubia, Red Wendtii, micro swords, red ludwigia, and java moss.
Tank Size:
55 gallons
Advice:
Read a lot online and learn from other's mistakes first.
Description:
A more recent picture, water is clearer, and the lighting is a bit brighter, changed from the two 18" to 1 48" tube and since it has a reflector its brighter. Also added a 70 aquaclear mechanical filter, works better than the old cascade. New additions were 3 clown gobies and 2 freshwater clams.
