Advice: After 20 years of doing this, I've learned that if you ask 100 people what the best way of doing something is (filtration, lighting, water chemistry, ect) you'll get 100 different answers...and they might all be correct Plan your project before you start, have a vision for your tank and be patient. The final product might take months to achieve. Mistakes can be expensive, but don't give up. Read, read, and read about the fish you want to keep and their natural biotope. Cichlid tanks can, and probably should, be "over-populated" to dilute their natural aggression. Everyone gets chased equally. IMHO, frequent water changes, particularly in a large aquarium, are overrated once a clean tank is established. I only add water to top off the tank, and rarely do significant water changes. My water chemistry stays stable with no detectable nitrates and my fish are breeding. Filtration is the key, but whether you use biologic, chemical, mechanical, or whatever combination thereof does not matter as long as you have enough flow to maintain a stable system. Algae in an aquarium is an inevitability. Algae control is the name of the game. Get it to grow where you want, ie out of site, and not where you don't. Nerite snails are the best (even if you have a live planted tank--they don't eat anything but algae). In my tank, I allow a constant algae bloom in my refugium. My LED up top is excellent for fish viewing, but not so much that it fuels algae growth in my deeper tank.

About Yourself: Have kept a tropical tank for around 30 years and it's that long ago I can't remember what got me into it, probably the beauty of the fish in particular the Siamese Fighting Fish which I managed to breed a few years back. Sat up until around 2.30 am watching them fertilize the eggs and put them into the bubble nest. In general I just love keeping fish and find it rewarding once the tank is all set up and planted out well, the latter being the hardest to do for me. Pete.

Advice: Spend plenty of time observing your fish and don't forget to do regular water changes of around 15 to 20% once or twice a week, I do it twice a week. I now use RO water because I have tested my tap water and found that it is high in nitrate. I have my own RO filtration unit and also use the water for making cups of tea, which I must tell you tastes far better than tap water. Another thing to remember is always wash your filters in a bucket of water that you have just drained from your tank and NOT under the tap, if you have more than one filter as I do then you can clean one and leave the other for a month, this way you will always have good bacteria in one of them. There is plenty of good info on the net now, so just read up and filter the info to suit your particular needs.

About Yourself: Used to breed koi when i was a kid
Fish Kept: Various south american cichlids (dempsey, texas, brasiliensis, a few firemouths, cons) Mbuna & Hemichromis variants Aequidens Bala sharks, black sharks, clown loach, other botia, ancistrus, pictus, synodontis, a dozen corys, danios and even a shoal of platies :) A mad mixture of fish, but there's plenty of room and tank is stable and peaceful except at feed time. Other (6ft) tank has guppies, platies, swordtails, corys, rams and a big ol' severum who's just celebrated his 8th birthday
Corals/Plants: Cryptocorynes, swords, anubias, vallus, canadian pondweed, water lettuce, dwarf water lillies. For the bigger hericthys, fake plants are better although they don't like to eat java moss.
Tank Size: 400 gallons
Advice: Start gradually. Dont over crowd Dont over feed Big tanks are easier to manage. Dont skimp on decor as it reduces aggression between species and reduces stress on scaredy fish coz they can hide up. Many plants are very sensitive to water chemistry, persevere to find the right type. And buy decent filters and heating systems
