Fish Kept: Domestic: (store bought- only I didn't buy any of my fish. friends and family gave these to me) huge frontosa- named "big head todd", peacock bass, livingstoni, green severum, columbian shark, channel cat, 3 plecos, managuense, yellow lab, creamcycle chiclid. Wild Caught: (right out of local streams of va beach! just remember to acclamate the wild fish first.) white pearch, 2 croppy, blue gill, warmouth,
Corals/Plants: I tried live plants... way too much work for a large tank. Unless you like constant upkeep. I have all fake plants- but instead of buying them for a million dollars from a store. I went to a craft store and bought a bunch of fake plants. I cut them up and used glue gun to glue lava rocks to the bottoms. Use non toxic glue gun sticks.
Tank Size: 150 gallons
Advice: Do it. You'll learn alot!! Research everything you do before you do it!! I started from a couple pieces of glass and wood and made something great out of it. AND it all costed way less than if I had bought it all new. To see a final finished product that is beautiful and functional- It's well worth the time. All in all it's a great do it yourself project- a large do it yourself project. Especially when you live in an apartment complex and have to do alot of the construction your apartment and outside on a small slab. Would have been much easier in a garage. However, I am very happy with the results. It's something that fools everyone who looks at it and asks where I got it. I reply "Well... I made it. Yeah, the tank too."

Quote: "A great tank keeper is one who knows every inch of the tank, every rock, every current, every hide out as good as the fish who live within it." ~Me 2010
About Yourself: I love all animals and have many. Dogs, birds, chickens, and fish of course. When it comes to fish... I live "in" my tank which means I understand how it works from the inside out and I get great joy fromit... I love my fishys!!!

Advice: DON'T RUSH IT! I know thats its exciting to set up a fish tank but trust me, you will be sorry if you rush into things before your ready, or your tank is ready. -CYCLE YOUR TANK FIRST, check and test your water regularly! I look at my temp gauge probably 30 times a day because heaters do act up sometimes and you need to catch it before the temp goes crazy high or low. -LOOK...at your fish, each one every day, notice if they change behavior, look for bite marks, nipped fins, signs of disease like ich or velvet, fin rot etc. Are they eating? Do you have one fish that hogs all the food? feed accordingly. DONT OVERFEED! ONLY ONE PERSON SHOULD FEED THE FISH! that way overfeeding it less likely to occur. WEAR GLOVES when you are putting your hands in the water, for your own protection! -RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, find out for yourself... and always double check any and all info with mutiple sources and then use your best judgement. Never assume petstore people are telling you anything thats is right because 9 times out of 10 they are WRONG, and you, your wallet and your fishes pay for it big time. ~And lastly please please DO NOT TAP ON THE GLASS! Fish hate that! Anytime fish become stressed they release ammonia which is like poison for all the fish in your tank! Good Luck:)

About Yourself: My son gave me a 20 gallon tank 2 years ago and that grew into a 55 gallon Lake Malawi Mbuna set-up, and a 30 gallon planted community set-up and 2 fry tanks. I really enjoy watching the interactions and parenting behaviors of my fish.
Fish Kept: 30 Community Tank: 2 Bolivian Rams, 2 African Dwarf Frogs, 2 Oto Cats, 4 Cory's, groups of Zebra Danios, Neon Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, and a Mystery Snail. 55 Gallon African Mbuna Tank. * 2m/2F Labidochromis caeruleus (Electric Yellow Labs) * 1m/4F Metriaclima estherae (Red Zebra) * 1M/4F Pseudotropheus sp. "Acei" * 1M/3F Lab. Permutts * 1M Labidochromis sp. "Hongi" (SRT) **10 & 20 gallon tanks: Assorted fry from Bolivian Rams and African Mbunas.
Corals/Plants: Amazon Swords, Melon Swords, Java Firms and Java Moss. Christmas Moss, Hornwort, Wisteria, Onion plant, and many others I cannot remember the names.
Tank Size: 55 gallons
Advice: Read all you can about a type of fish you are thinking about. Do your research first!! Don't just buy on impulse, you may very well regret it. ALWAYS remember, those small fish you bring home will grow up someday, so take that into account. Use adult size when filling a tank, not the size they are right from the store. No, you cannot keep community fish with African cichlids! They may all get along now, but when the cichlids reach maturity they WILL kill off the community fish!
