Advice: Educate yourself. Read from different sources and correlate information since there's lots of conflicting information on web sites and by people posting on different forums. Plan ahead. Where are you going to put the tank? How big of a tank can you realistically place in that location? Will that area support the weight of the aquarium? Estimate ~10 lbs. per gallon which includes substrate and other objects. Are you willing to do 20% water changes of 20 gallons on a 100 gallon tank or would you rather do 20% water changes of 6 gallons on a 20 gallon tank? How many fish do you expect to see while viewing the aquarium? Size accordingly. Use tool and bounce ideas around with forums members. What type of fish do you want? Are they going to get along together? Do they eat the same food? Can they coexist at the same water temperature and water environment. Are you going to want live plants? Are you going to pick species that will be able to thrive in the environment that the fish will live in? Are you willing to trim and care for plants as well as the fish? More questions than answers. These are some of the questions you should research and have answers to before you buy your equipment. You then need to do your research on the different type of equipment to house your new world. Enjoy!

Quote: Do as you would be done by.
About Yourself: I work as a Countryside Ranger. I enjoy visiting the countryside with family and friends, doing things with my kids, playing sports and keeping fit, listening to progressive and avant garde music and looking after my house, car and garden. I started in the aquarium hobby when 8 years old when my mum bought me an 18" tank for bringing home a good school report. I've kept and bred many fish and had most of the usual disasters that good knowledge can save us from. I have 4 aquaria and look after another one at my local primary school. My Clown Loach are 15 years old and going strong. I look after my family and fish before turning to anything else.
Fish Kept: 8" Electric Blue Jack Dempsey, 6 x 6" Clown Loach, 5" Kissing Gourami, 4 x 6" Boesemans Rainbow, Brown Ancistrus, Gold Ancistrus.
Corals/Plants: Setularia argentea.
Tank Size: 90 gallons
Advice: This is a great hobby. However, fish live in their toilet and will die unless you detoxify their environment. First deal with the ammonia by developing a mature filter then deal with the nitrate by changing some of the water regularly. Your fish live in their loo, So there are things you've got to do. To stop things going out of kilter, Make sure you have a good mature filter. The next solution to pollution, Is water changes, that's dilution!

About Yourself: Well, my friend got an aquarium. I decided to get her a fish one day and ended up with my OWN aquarium! That was back in February... my only regret is that I only bought a 10 Gallon. Aside from that I work with dogs, live in Humboldt and spend much of my time at the beach.
Fish Kept: 1 Bumblebee Goby, 1 Apistogramma Borellis Dwarf Cichlid, 4 Celestial Pearl Danios, 2 Guppies, 2 Ghost shrimp and 4 Cherry shrimp
Corals/Plants: all plastic
Tank Size: 10 gallons
Advice: Be aware of what you want in your aquarium and set it up accordingly. Take your time with it. Rushing the process will most likely cause problems. I'de also like to mention that the smaller the tank the less room for error!!
