Wouldn't a pool or spa filter be like a big version of one of those?

yea, but you shouldn't need such a huge filter... especially since it takes time for the biological bugs to start growing onto the sand... and if there is way too much sand it's just not going to be so efficient...

just make or buy a small one... the small ones they sell for aquariums can handle up to 300gallons...

Hmmmm. OK. I thought the bigger the better. You do have ponds so you should know.

i could possably be filtering in exsess of 2000 gallons with all the tanks and the green house and the collection system - - - so wouldn't a small pool filter be better??? - - i haven't done any checking yet but i just put a pool in for my parents 24 foot round 52 inches deep and that filter does 20gallons a minute - - -they offer and 18 foot and a 15 foot as well so im think the filters would be smaller - -i'll ave to check

Dang. I'd think it would work really well.

Maybe using gravel instead of sand to change the dynamics of the flow. ????

I'd like to know what these bacteria look like, how big the different kinds really are, what amount of room they really need for optimum growth.

sand > gravel... or else you have a UGF... and those get outperformed by biowheels...

A UGF grts outperformed by bio-wheels? I doubt it.

I'm just thinking of how the sand is allways rubbing and banging around with a sand filled filter. Doesn't this harm the bacteria?
