Hair Algae!!!!

by fishman101

I am having a major prob. with hair algae and am looking for help please. it is taking over my tank and i have tried everything i think. water parameters are as follows nitrite=0,nitrate=0,phosphate=0, PH=6.6. 2 1/2 watts per gallon on lighting, UV sterilizer co2 injection, using plant tabs and liquid fertilizer. Have Discus and Angel fish in tank. what can i do to get rid of the algae. have put the algae eaters in ( otos, Siamese flying fox, shrimp) you name it. done more light less light more aeration, more water movement, now i am just at my wits end. keep removing all the algae by hand that i can twice a day but it seems to grow faster than i can pull it. so if anyone has a suggestion i will try it. and thank you so much for your time. Butch

When you say less light, how many hours a day? is your tank in sunlight?

I think mine went away after using overdoses of algafix, or maybe it was the pleco I bought or the tilapia who grew up. I'm not sure I would overdose algafix with diskus. How about less fertiliser/nutrients of one kind or another?

Are you disturbing the substraight? I've read that substraight disturbances on heavily planted tanks can cause excessive algae growth. I've read that this algae can be removed with a tooth brush, and I would remove as much as possible while you figure out what is causing the excess growth.

that was my next step in thought swp....

with zero nitrates, are you cycled yet? if not, the algae is normal and will go away with the end of the cycle... also, if u arent doing too many water changes or inadequate filteration, the excess waste will bring about algae from the excess of phosphates in your water column.
