Loaches are fun. I like dojos, though they will get about 6 inches long. It's fun to see them interact if you have more than one.
As far as I know puffers are really territorial and may not be a good "community" fish.
I like the tank I have that has lots of very small fish. They are schooling tetras (cardinals and golds) and I can have quite a few without overloading the tank.
I do have a dojo that's 6 inches long in there, and yes he does dig up some of the shallow rooted plants I'm trying to grow, but I think I can get the grass and dwarf baby tears going anyway.

If your going for an eel, check which size it can grow too, as they may look small in the fish shop, but after a few months, they grow a LOT bigger

African Spiny Eel 6"
Half-banded Spiny Eel 8"
as far as the eel: "Eel Caecomastacembelus afromastacembelus ophidium"...at 4 inches, I sure would like to know where to get one that is peaceful, that is, one without the scientific name or description :)
