Which trigger fish would be reef safe and/or invert safe?

Niger triggers should be reef safe. I wouldn't try them with inverts though, apparently they will munch on them.

Are there really reef safe triggerfish? I thought they were like the worse for reef tanks - or am I confusing them with another fish?

Yes, the triggerfish from a few different genera - Melichthys, Odonus, and Xanthichthys - are typically better behaved with corals (and in some cases, inverts) because of different behaviors and diets than other generas of triggerfish, I think.

Look up the crosshatch and the bluechin :) From memory they're both reef safe.
