What are some ways to cut costs? I feel like there's a million different supplies needed to setup a new tank! Not to mention the tank itself, livestock, plants...It all adds up.

Some pet stores (maybe Petco?) have a $1 per gallon sale at certain times of the year. So if you're wanting to buy a brand new tank you can wait for one of those sales? (not sure if you're looking for a tank now or later) Second hand tanks are always great too. Lots of aquarists go for second hand tanks off free ads online.

As for other supplies, you may be able to find these second hand as well, or find sales. Keep an eye on online stores that sell aquarium supplies, you'll occasionally find sales/promo codes/etc.

Local aquarium club? I'm thinking there might be aquarium supply discounts to members. Not sure if the discounts would be large enough to be worth it though since I'm assuming aquarium clubs charge a fee in order to become a member.
