I'm getting conflicting information on this - should you routinely add salt to freshwater aquariums? I've heard it is very beneficial - possibly necessary? - for platies and guppies and some other freshwater fish.

This is a long standing myth. Freshwater fish don't need salt so there's no reason to add it unless there's a specific reason to, such as, to combat an illness.
