Do you know what to do during a power outage?

by kate_kuhli

Hurricane Hermine is hitting here right now and it got me thinking whether people have plans in place in case of power outage during times like this?

The most worrying part of your filters not running is that the bacteria starts dying off due to a lack of moisture/oxygen, so if you don't have any way of ensuring the filter media gets enough moisture, and oxygen (which is the more difficult part), then you might experience a mini cycle or even have to start the cycling process all over again...not at all good, especially if you have delicate fish.

I think it's worth having a backup generator for your aquariums for this very reason! So many people have lost fish because of power outages (sometimes hundreds or thousands of dollars worth O_O) and even if you don't lose any fish it's still a massive inconvenience and worry, so I think it's definitely worthwhile to have another generator. They don't even cost all that much. I'm looking into getting one myself.
