Housing multiple plecos together?

by friend_of_fish

Are plecos okay to house together? If I have males and females will they breed? I think it would be neat for them to breed and watch baby plecos grow up, but then I don't want lots of them. Are they really prolific? Can I just remove any eggs I find, or might the eggs be well hidden?

Sorry for all the questions lol.

Some plecos are aggressive - males especially I think.

Certain species are more docile towards each other though, such as bristlenose. A lot of people keep multiple bristlenose together but I think they do breed pretty readily.

Be careful of putting closely related species together due to inbreeding. Hypancistrus often inbreed, for example.

Also make sure they have the same requirements. Some plecos need warmer waters than others and some have different diets.

So you want to thoroughly research the plecos you're getting beforehand and ask questions if you're unsure. :)
