if its a digital camera try setting the mode to sports mode or action mode, give that a try.

im on the same boast as you. Lots of trial and error! LOL! every now 'n then i get a few good ones.
i'd like to follow this thread to see if anyone else with experience chimes in with some pointers.
my hardware: Canon EOS Rebel T3

im sure i tweaked these to some extent.
i usually find that the three settings - well maybe four that make a huge difference are the shadows, highlights, contrast and sharpness.
i use paint.net as well as faststone ... but yes takes me a few tries to finally get one that will be decent enough after a little work, but nothing compared to some of the shots i see others take. i know hardware has a lot to do with it and i probably should have posted the specs of the lens on the camera too but if someone should post whos more knowledgeable and asks - ill update then, cause honestly at the moment - off the top of my head - i really dont know.
