Hey Guys,
I'm new to this forum and would appreciate your help on this. My friend had a freshwater fish which looked weird and i want to know what type of fish it is. It's body structure is in between a gar & a catfish, has a long mouth and spiky top fins that shoot up when alert. I have attached a picture of it & hope its clear enough as its the only one i got and hope someone can help me find what it is.
Thanks in advance...
What kind of fish is this?

It has really cool stripes, whatever it is. I wish you hadn't taken it out of the water to photograph; a picture of it underwater from the side would have been more useful for identifying it.
Update: Tanner, a member of a facebook fish group with me, identified your fish as a tiger shovelnose catfish :)

I seen one of these at my LFS a year or two ago. Wow what a beautiful fish! Now...the scribble on the tank in that erasable crayon junk it said RARE. Then it said 600! It was there for months and months. It's eating was hard to watch since he was so fast at just sucking the fish up. I'd love to have one of these someday. I'd need some real monsters to keep with him. But I could be wrong also a pic in the tank would help. But I think I'm pretty close. I didn't even read the words just seen the pic and told my wife to look at this. The one I seen was smaller and a little more white but googling the pics only showed a very small handful of pics idk this might help
