i was talking about natural slate most landscaping slate contains titanium oxide or potassium sulfide to keep it from breaking it has a small chance to leach out if the stone is wet so i don't use it

the slate I purchased was from a landscape store...just piles and piles of different rock, stone, quartz, etc.
as for telling if the rock is okay to use: here's a trick, place about half of a teaspoon of vinegar on the rock, if it fizzes up it is no good (too many chemicals will leach out); no fizz, the rock is safe
tell us how it all goes

I use this web site when im shopping for stone. You dont have to order from them but they have great descriptions on what stone is what. My personal favorite for caves n such is lace rock and chocolate gray slate.
