The best canister filter is no canister filter. ;) sounds stupid..........but with saltwater your just asking for trouble with one. A lot of us have found out the hard way. Its literally better to run no filter on a reef tank then to run a canister, because it just traps wastes and adds nitrates to your water column in turn damaging corals and causing algae to grow.

well....... its kinda your decision, if you can take it back i would, personally, but i mean if it really comes down to it ive ran my tank on an FX5 for over a year now, you just have to clean it often, which is easier said than done.

I'd use the canister, which are excelent filters, and put a sponge filter over it's intake. Then you can just pop the sponge off every now and agian and clean it under tap water. The sponge will trap most of the big stuff leaving the canister to be more efficient at cycling the tank.

Uhh .....Mro2you2........I don't keep track of how many posts I've made.......but yes, I am trying to get good at fresh water issues. I'll get into salt when I am more stable financially and can do it right. It takes many months to get ready to grow coral, and I'm not ready to do it right at this time. I'd grow a 1000 gallon reef tank if I could.

dude, that is an excellent idea, that way you dont have all those big organic particles sitting in the bottom of the filter..... i think ill try doing that, is there an easier way to put those on the inlet than just using a zip tie to keep it on there? i have one on the inlet of my mag drive and its really hard to stay on there, the diameter of the sponge is right at the same size of hte inlet pipe thing but it slides off really easy and its hard to get the zip tie on it when i clean hte sponge
