New 500 Gallon Acrylic tank without top & base HELP!!!!!

by thomgough

I was recently given a 55 gallon tank with several fish (Silver Arowana, Dinasour Bichir, Alligator Gar x 2, Grouper?, Albino Frog, several pleco's a clown knife etc.... I was told by a few people that I needed a bigger tank so I bought a 500 gallon on craigslist and now I need to set it up without killing the fish.... PLEASE HELP I have no filters, pumps, lights etc just the tank as you can see in the picture.

well..... first off your gonna need some $$$ not just sum, quite a bit. filtration is going to have to me some type of sump system, and it should probally be a mininum of 200 - 250 gallons, a masssive pump your gonna have to move atleast 2000 g/h, some type of heater, i have no clue hot that would work on a system that big. lightnh shouldnt be that big of deal just regular florecents should do fine unless you decide you want to go planted or something, then you will need atleast 2wpg umm the stand is probally gonna have to be a custom job, by someone who really knows what they are doing b/c when that thing is full it is gonna weigh around 5000 lbs, and then you will need to cycle the whole thing if you go through the trouble of doing all of this then just toss the fish in they will all die.... hope this helped

Somehow I said 55 gallon it's actually 500 but you seem to have gotten that. I figured on spending a couple thousand originally but I get the feeling it may very well exceed that. I should mention I have 2 30 gallon tanks a 50 gallon tank and a 55 gallon tank that are all stocked with various cichlids so i do have some (limited) experience but a tank this size with this type of selection of fish is well beyond my current capabilities. I am figuring on custom drilling the tank as well and would love some input on where & how.

I may be confused so I am looking to clarify you said "ou will need to cycle the whole thing if you go through the trouble of doing all of this then just toss the fish in they will all die" did you mean they will not die if I do this but if I do not they will? I do my level best to keep my word and I promised the previous owner I would take care of his fish so I am very concerned about keeping them alive. I picked them up in Oceanside,CA in the tank and brought them back with a heavy bubbler setup in the back of my Avalanche (an 8 hour drive) and I have taken every possible precaution to keep them alive throughout the entire experience. I have already become very attached to these fish and I want them to thrive hence the massive outlay of $$$ which is burning my wallet quickly so any help you can give without bankrupting me is greatly appreciated. When I originally was told about the fish I was under the impression that they were housed in an aquarium large enough to hold all of them but I am now aware that it is grossly undersized and I want to make sure they stay happy & healthy so I am going to the extra unexpected expense to make sure of that.
