My DIY stuff I wanted to share

by dizzcat

I thought I would share some of my Do-It-Yourself stuff with you all.

Soda Bottle Fish Trap
Ever try to catch a fish without removing everything? Try this, it works!

Take an empty soda bottle, cut the top off, put the top inside and bait the bottle with goodies. Once they go inside they cannot figure out how to get back out. The only time my Africans get blood worms is when I need to catch one. They cannot resist! I use a large Mountain Due bottle because the top is wider than a regular one.

Here's what I mean:

Here I caught 2 young Yellows. (I was actually trying to catch my Acei)

And here I caught the "Big Guy" my dominant Yellow

Home Made Plants:
I buy silk plants at the craft store for a fraction of the cost. I pull the wires out (they can rust) then tie a piece of lava rock to the tips.

Egg Tumbler for African Cichlid eggs.
I discovered this the other day. My Acei keeps spawning but she swallows the eggs after a few days. I don't know if they are fertile or not. I made this yesterday to try to hatch the eggs. I stripped her and put them in here.
I cut the bottom off a clear plastic spice bottle. Covered the hole with netting. I poked holes in the top. Inserted a airline and stone and stuck it in the tank. The air stone makes the eggs bounce all over, tumbling them like a mama does.

In the tank. Bubbles up top, tan eggs on the bottom against the netting

I have a breeders net that I wanted to put most of my Bolivian Ram fry in so that they would not starve. Well, problem is, Angel fish (and most cichlids) can suck the fry right thru the netting! So I took some plastic canvas and covered 3 sides. It allows the water to still flow thru, but the fish cannot suck the fry thru. It worked! My Angels could not get to the fry!

Lastly I wanted to show you how I divide my tank when my Rams spawn. I have a store bought divider, but the fry can swim right thru the holes. So I buy netting at a fabric store and cover the divider with it. I put the netting side to the fry. They cannot get thru. Its hard to see because I use a dark green netting. The netting also collects stuff and the fry munch along it all day.
