Ok i have a red zebra well what i thought was a red zebra. When i got him or her it was the beautiful bright orange color now that its gettin a little older and bigger its color is changing. Its now a darker orange the fins have black trim around them theres black stripes running down its side and it has black stripes on its face similiar to the ones on and electric blue. Is this not a red zebra or is it a hybrid of some sort? I have pics click the link and see. I couldnt get a pick of it with its fins spread or of its face sorry.

Yeah, I am with gumbii on this one. The markings on your fish are not the normal markings a male develops as he ages. The horizontal stripes certainly do make it look like it has some auratus in it. Even the orange color of the fish looks off. Let me search around and see if I can find someone else who has a hybrid that looks like this one. In the mean time it is safe to say that your fish is not a pure red zebra.

well I will leave it up to miani & gumbii on this one. I never had a red zebra or a cichlid so this is out of my knowledge. Only that I read that when this type of fish matures, a male will change from orange to black underside with blue fins and the female will remain red orange.
so it's all yours gumbii & miami

well i tried long and hard to find a picture of anything like your fish without any avail. However i can definately tell you that it is for surely not a pure breed. It doesn't look anything like any photos of red zebras on google image searches first 20 pages. I also searched auratus hybrids and still no avail. Hopefully someone can classify this as I am also interested in finding it out.

well... female auratus melachromis kind of have the same colorings, but are alot brighter... that's where i got that genus from... but they are other cichlids that have auratus markings that i've seen around... i'll look at some of my books right now...

There are several people over at www.cichlids.com that are very good at figuring out hybrids. Post your pictures over there and ask them to ID it. Don't post it in the forums - instead upload it as a picture on the main page. People generally get good feedback. They probably won't be able to tell you for sure, but at least you can get an idea. Sorry I cannot help further. Identifying hybrids is not my specialty.
Yeah, Petsmart and Petco are notorious for hybrids. That is why I buy at local fish stores. Hybrids are tricky as you never know how they are going to behave. Good luck.
