I have a 10 gallon tank with black sand and two 10 watt 50/50 bulbs on about 8 hours a day. There is one Betta in this tank. I'd like a very low foreground plant. Not much room in this tank to grow tall. I like the looks of plants like Pygmy Chain Swords. There is no CO2.....any suggestions?
Thanks

Would like your plant recommendation for a 10 gallon!

dwarf baby tears would probly make out ok. though I tried them in my 5gal (single 10w 50/50) with actinics and they didn't fare so well. If not microsword is growing <1wpg in my 16gal, still...They would be growing fine at 2.7wpg were it not for the stupid brown/brush algae choking them out in my 30gal.

I'd go with Anubias Nana. These plants don't need much light and are quite beautiful. There are a number of varieties of Anubias, but Nana is the smallest I believe with leaves as small as dime sized.
Baby tears need lots of light, and so does Microsword. Java fern is nice but a bit finicky as the plants easily get damaged in transport and start growing new leaves right off the older dying ones. You also have to tie Java fern down to wood as it won't grow in gravel.

Hi I also have a 10 gallon fish tank and the plants that work out very well for me are Dwarf Anubias, Amano moss (on rocks or pieces of wood). I also have a plant that looks like a bunch of very thin amazon grass or swords. Ludwigia looks good on background.
This plant looks good for 10 gal Lilaeopsis Mauritiana
I would stay away from amazon swords as their leaves are big and may look uncouth for a 10 gallon aquarium. I dont like how it looks.

Z - It was more by chance than anything. I popped into my Local Petsmart and there were some (for once) in the assorted potted plants. A sure bet to get authentic and healthy plants is to order online. Some stores even have them attatched to various objects ie: wood, screen, etc.
Petsmart doesn't seem to follow a general rule when ordering the assorted potted, they just get whatever, whenever.

I like the looks of microsword but I guess I don't have enough light. I don't want to blow my Betta out of the tank with a plant light. They are accustomed to murkier water. Although, nothing seems to phase Starvin' Marvin' as long as he gets his Pro Betta food on time....
I saw some Dwarf Anubias Nana on Aquabid. Maybe that's a go.... I found some Willow Leaf Hygro on Ebay that look nice and I'll try it as a background.
Anything for some subtle color besides green?

My new fav color plant which will gather a fair amount of red without high light as long as iron ferts are supplied are narrow-leaf red ludwigia. They grow relatively high though. The one in my 30gal has grown to a foot. Background - midground stuff there. Far more attractive imo than the generic red ludwigia. The leaves are a shiny red/green.

I like red ludwigia. What does it do to a tall plant to keep cutting it short? I could put one in my 10 gallon tank but I'd have to top it occasionally.
