Peter, your advice saved me, what are you talking about!!!!!???? If i had kept the original airstones I am confident my tank would have gone through a heap of trouble. The powerheads are what kept the water circulating well enough to get filtered... i think the heavier sediment laid on the bottom, out of the way. The issue I have is with the ugf in general... I think I would prefer to just do without one in the future, that way i don't have to worry about all this.

But your advice was good, don't worry. I will make use of the powerheads somehow, they oxygenate the water very very well.... my fish were always energized and happy.

You can't go wrong with cilyndrical sponge filters. They can keep the bigger peices of guck out of the main filters and provide excelent base for benneficial bacteria to live. They're also very easy to clean. Powerheads are very cool and versitile.
