get a filter rated bigger than your tank is. and gravel vacuum every month, take some water out and put new water in once to four times a month.10 -25% depends on how much nitrate or bad stuff- ammonia-nitrite, is in your tank.

not overfeeding is a great way to keep it clean too. i find my cichlids love kelp pellets and after a month when i gravel vac'd there was no crap in the gravel. of coarse i have more rock in now so i have to keep it clean cuz its harder to clean

do not overfeed and water change 20-30% each week

no need to vacuum the gravel

I have discus fish with no gravel. Its a simple tank only a airstone is there nothing more in it.

I agree with everyone I do overfeed on purpose and it is hard to keep clean. But WOW what growth I get! My tank never steps into dangerous levels just always gets dirty fast:(
But good luck on that substratless tank!
