Need help selecting a filter
I'm currenlty working on my 55gal cichlid tank (will have updated pictures soon!!!) and I'm looking to purchase a canister filter. My question is, are they really better than a "overhang filter"? I was thinking about putting my Emperor 400 in my 55 but, I think I might just keep the Emperor in my 30 gallon and get a canister filter for the 55gal. Is it worth it? I'm not looking to buy anything really fancy. I would like to stay at or under $125 for the canister. From what I've researched, I can get a decent canister filter for around that price range.Thoughts, suggestions?????? What should I do?????

EHEIM Classic External Canister, Hands down.......
These are supposed to be some of the best, They last forever and are totally silent. I would go with the largest one that you can afford. Search around for the best price, and remember, you may need to buy media separately

I actually just bought one yesterday I bought the 2113 EHIEM which is rated for 65 gallons. I wanted a bigger one but, can't really afford it right now. I'm really hoping the 2113 is big enough. I researched a lot and I must say that the EHIEM looks like the way to go.
Do you think that the 65 gallon rated EHEIM will be fine for my 55 cichlid tank? If not, I have an additional 20 gallon filter that I might add to give it a little extra filtration.

can't afford it right now :( the emperor is in my 30 gallon and all I have is another 20 gallon filter (whisper 20) I know it's not much but, I'm gonna add that one to my 55. So, I'll have the canister and the whisper for my 55 and the emperor for my 30. I should be alright (until I get more $$$$) :)

sounds good! If you can afford it, I would add a sponge filter powerhead insted of the 20g filter. They are a great mech and bio filter as well as a good form of circulation.(and quiet) http://www.petco.com/product/5543/Marin ... ilter.aspx
