Lighting question

by newbie916

I've been running my daytime and actinics at the same time. My actinics turn on at 8:30 am and turn off at 6:00pm. My daytime lights turn on at 9:00am and turn off at 5:30 pm. Does that sound right or should they not be running at the same time? My corals and clams seem to be ok with it and I haven't had any problems and my water is clear. However, I still have the green algae that's been growing on my LR and back wall.

If its a new tank, algae blooms are common. Your time frame for photo period seems ok. Just leave it for a while longer, and see if you get diatom blooms, which is a brown stuff on substrate and wall, this is generally caused either by phosphate or to much light

Thanks, I will keep it running the way it is and look out for diatom blooms.

yeah I had the same algae problems, and I just asked these guys about the light photo period. After changing my lighting times the algea is pretty much dying off. I also added a small 5 Watt UV sterilizer that also helped.
