| About Yourself: |
I ACTUALLY STARTED THIS THROUGH MY WIFE, SHE HAD GUPPIES, AND PLATYS. I STARTED THE SEMI AGRESSIVE AND FROM THERE WENT TO CICHLIDS AND THAT WILL BE ALL I EVER OWN. I WORK FOR FRESHPOINT (A PRODUCE SUPPLIER OWNED BY SYSCO FOODS) AS A NIGHT SHIPPING SUPERVISOR. 3 YEARS ON THE JOB. I ALSO BUILD STANDS AND CANOPIES AS A SIDE BUSINESS AND I LOVE THE HOBBY. I ALSO BUILD ALL MY SET UPS. |
| Advice: |
If you are the type of person that takes your interest seriously then do not buy the smallest tank starting out. Also gather info from the internet, books, private owned pet stores (no petsmart/petco) buy supplies from there but take no info. |

Don't do today what you can put off until tomorrow.(Only joking, of course) |
| About Yourself: |
Have kept a tropical tank for around 30 years and it's that long ago I can't remember what got me into it, probably the beauty of the fish in particular the Siamese Fighting Fish which I managed to breed a few years back. Sat up until around 2.30 am watching them fertilize the eggs and put them into the bubble nest. In general I just love keeping fish and find it rewarding once the tank is all set up and planted out well, the latter being the hardest to do for me.
Pete. |
| Advice: |
Spend plenty of time observing your fish and don't forget to do regular water changes of around 15 to 20% once or twice a week, I do it twice a week. I now use RO water because I have tested my tap water and found that it is high in nitrate.
I have my own RO filtration unit and also use the water for making cups of tea, which I must tell you tastes far better than tap water.
Another thing to remember is always wash your filters in a bucket of water that you have just drained from your tank and NOT under the tap.
There is plenty of good info on the net now, so just read up and filter the info to suit your particular needs. |

Malawi Tank
4 Yellow labs and 1 Hap. for now. |
| Tank Size: |
90 |
| Description: |
Diy project done September 2007, my latest addition is a Yellow Lab Malawi tank underneath, this was to save one Malawi from near death in his tank, he was being picked on, so I built a tank for him (Malcom) and got him some mates and now he is fine.He is the dominant male in this tank.
The main tank is 10ft long x 16" high x 15" depth. The stand is made of 2" X 2" steel box section and will hold the weight of over 2 tonnes,On top of that is a timber flat base and polystyrene. All the doors are pine and painted. The hood is pine and primed and painted. The glass is 8mm thick but the bottom has an extra section (which is 16mm smaller than the base) thus forming and corner to bond the sides to. Used six tubes of top quality silicone. But was still petrified when I GRADUALLY filled it. (No leaks. phew!!)There are 4 x 42" T8 Auaqglow lights and the condensation tray is made from poly carbon and cut into 6 sections with handles fitted for ease of access to any section of the tank.
The are 3 external fluval 405 filters and 2 300 watt heaters.
I have now gone away from using gravel as substrate and use silica sand instead, have used this for the last year and regardless of what you read about it being no good for plants I have found that my plants have flourished since changing to sand.
The Malawi tank is just a 3foot one with loads of caves for them and so far they seem fine.
Hungry buggers though ! |

| Advice: |
Take your time - there is no rush. Study as much as you can on your fish. Not ALL fish can go together. Get the biggest tank you can! Good planning is all worth it in the end. I've had reef, planted and all things in between, cichlids have been the best I've kept. |

New rock design for my African Cichlid tank. |
| About Yourself: |
From the time i was a small kid i wanted to have an aquarium. But only 3 years ago i got into the hobby and bought a small 25 gallon tank. I experimented a lot with different kinds of fish. I loved african Cichlids but noticed that they need a bigger tank, a 100 gallon tank is a minimum. So i bought this tank... |
| Advice: |
Don't rely on the guy in the aquarium shop to choose you're fish.....do you're own research.
Over filter and do 20% water changes every week...dont use any chemicals for the water. |

| Advice: |
I agree with everyone that states: "Get the largest tank one can afford without getting divorced." Learn as much as one can. It only enriches the experience. Helpful websites: Live aquaria.com for plants and www.cichlid-forum.com for genis identification, behavioral, and dietary traits. Aquascaping is a key factor in reducing stress resulting from conspecific hostility. Also, selecting specimines from varying sub-species will avoid this potential problem. For example: Pick your favorite auloncara, pundamilla, haplochrome, Protomealus etc.. |
| Fish Kept: |
Currently: 2 pleco. 2 featherfin synodontis. 1 male sunshine peacock, 2 female. 1 male O.B. peacock 1 female, I SRONGLY ADVISE only keep 1 auloncara male. The Alpha continually displays aggression to affirm dominance. Often the Beta male will never reach his full color potential as a result of this pressure. 1 male Cyrtocara Moori, 1 female. 1 Male Burundi Frontosa, 1 unsexed. 1 Black Calvus. 1 Yellow Calvus. 1 male Scienchromis ahli, 1 female. 1 Male labidochromis, 1 female. 1 female protomelus stevini (Taiwan reef) 1 Red top Fulleborni. and 6 Giant Danios. The Giant Danios do wonderfully in a cichlid tank. They provide a contrast between predator/ prey if you will. Even if that is not the case. Also, through my observations I believe the skiddish by nature danios allow the cichlids to relax. It's almost as if the cichlids key off of their response to danger. They also provide action at the top off the tank creating balanced levels. Cichlids mid to bottom and synodontis residing at the bottom. |
| Plants Kept: |
5 crinum thianum. 1 Anubias flazzeli. 1 Anubias Barteri. 3 Java ferns. 2 Java Windelov. approximately 5 cups of java moss. 1 potted crypt wendtii. 5 bunches of Hornwort. All low light, high PH tolerant plants. Also, the varieties chosen are unlikely to be eaten by all but 1 of my cichlids. I do keep 1 herbivour, the fulleorini, who will at times nibble, but very little or no damage is incurred. The introduction of an abundance of Hornwort has clarified my water significantly. Of course, as with anything, read up on it prior to introducing it to your tank |
| Tank Size: |

| Description: |
Cichlid tank, ALL GLASS brand ported and plumbed with 1 corner overflow/return. Wet Dry filter with bio balls and 10 gal. sump. Crushed coral and gravel subtrate. Petrified wood and slate hardscape accompanied by several low light, and high PH tolerant plants. Solid Oak stand and canopy. All glass top with 2 strip lights, and 2 heaters, but 1 is currently being utilized in the fry tank. (currently have 100+ fry) |

| Advice: |
Keep it clean! I do 45-50% water changes every week without fail. Also over filter your tanks as much as you can, I put twice the filtration recommended, it keeps the water cleaner, safer and more movement, If you can afford another filter theres no disadvantage |
