My first tank in years. This is a fully brackish tank, complete with figure 8 puffers, a columbian shark, sailfin mollies, and an orange chromide. |
| Quote: |
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. |
| About Yourself: |
Loved my freshwater tank as a child, but wanted to get into something more serious and different now as an adult, many years later. I discovered that very few brackish tanks make up the percentage of household aquariums, and wanted to give myself a challenge. I found that with the right research, these unique aquaria are very inexpensive and very interesting to say the least. The puffers, however, are what sold me. They are highly intelligent, and although can be a pain and aggressive to other tank mates, I think they are well worth the effort. |
| Advice: |
ALWAYS cycle a tank before putting fish into it. This is especially true of many brackish species who need the bacteria to be healthy. Know your fish as well when you buy. Research, research, and then research. Forums are great places to look up info on your species of choice.
Also, be wary when purchasing brackish species. Many of them are kept in fresh water due to the inconsistancy of retailer info. Most "brackish" species, or those labelled as such, do much better in a proper brackish environment. A great example are figure 8 puffers, who are much healthier and happier (and less stressed) in brackish waters, as that is their natural habitat.
Please keeps your puffers well fed, or they will eat their tank-mates fins as a substitute! |
| Fish Kept: |
- 4 small figure 8 puffers (my primary interest)
- 2 orange sailfin mollies (breeding pair used to cycle the tank, a hardy couple)
- 1 columbian shark
- 1 orange chromid
- also currently close to 30-35 mollie fry, soon to be sold. |
| Corals/Plants Kept: |
All silk plants to create adequate cover for the puffers, who are territorial and require it to lessen inter-species altercations and fin-nipping.
Argonite sand substrate, as suggested by several figure 8 puffer experts - this simulates their natural habitat.
Lava and coral rock, and seashells. |
| Tank Size: |
35 |
| Description: |
35 Gal display tank. Complete Brackish water system and species. Whisper 30-60 filter, generic heater (not yet installed as it's the middle of a hot summer), argonite sand substrate, daylight 24" floresant lighting. |
