Re: How small for a nano tank?
Is it just for plants or do you want fish or shrimp etc in it? For fish etc I wouldn't really want to go any smaller than a 3 gallon. Maybe a 2.5. The bigger it is the more options you have and the easier it is to maintain, remember. Even doing a nice looking aquascape will be easier in a bigger tank - more room to maneuver.
But if you're going for a real nano tank and you want plants and fish/inverts then a 3g would work well with some nano fish and/or small shrimp such as cherries.

If I were setting up a nano tank, I'd get a 2.5 gallon for a betta and a few small plants. Oh, and a nice big piece of driftwood as decor and as a way to make the tank appear larger than it is.
I'm not really sure if this would qualify as a nano tank though as bettas are not nano fish, but 2.5 gallons are nano tanks. Either way, it's a very small size but still would look very nice and give a lot of viewing pleasure.
