I've recently had to deal w/an algae problem in my tank. I'm happy to say that it is no longer a problem...FINALLY! Here are some things i did with my tank: Went from about 14 hours of lighting to about 9 or 10, added more plants (healthy plants compete w/algae), added DIY CO2, added Amano and Red Cherry shrimp, added nerite snails.

Yes direct sunlight is one of the worst things for a tank.

I cannot verify if CO2 does help get rid of it. All I know is that I used to get the brown algae in my tank and since starting CO2 I no longer get it. I feel it is because the plants are now growing fast enough to starve out the algae. I also have a couple little Otto Cats and what algae does try to grow, they eat it.

direct sunlight is perfect for a tank (check out my profile) as long as it is regulated by blinds and you have otocinclus catfish in the tank

too many weird concepts in this hobby...direct sunlight is bad for a tank. Bah Humbug!!!!
