Here we go again!! :-)

by dizzcat

I went over to get a flashlight in the cupboard next to my Bolivian Ram tank so I could look into the African Cichlid tank to see if there was any Electric Yellow fry in a pile of rocks. The mama is due to release any time now. Well, glanced at the Ram tank and caught mom and pop spawning! So, stayed to watch. I got some pics and video, but they were in the back, and the angle of the shot was too off to get a clear shot. So the photos are a tad blurry. They covered a flat river stone, that is 1 1/2" x 3" with eggs. There is about 150 again!

The last few spawns the mama would beat the crap out of the papa right after the spawn. She didn't want him near her and the eggs. Problem was, until the batch last month, she would eat the fry as they hatched. Well, checked up on them a few minutes ago and papa is the one who won out this time! I have been wanting him to be in charge the last few times, because he is an awesome dad. So, she is on the other side of the tank and he is over the eggs fanning. I will put up the divider tonight so he doesn't have to worry about all the other fish.

This time I will catch about 30 fry and put them in the breeder net as soon as they become free swimming. That way I will know that they are eating and having no trouble finding the food. I will keep them in there about a week, until they are a little bigger and stronger then raise them in the 10 gallon for awhile.

So, here is a short video of both. Mom is laying the eggs, pops is following behind fertilizing them:

Here's a couple photos of the process. Its links since the site doesn't want to post pis right now.

If you watch the video's, you can really see the difference in the fins of the male and female.
The male has long filaments on the end of his tail fin and his dorsal is much longer and pointer at the back end. :-)

congrats on yet another success...
is there something you're noticing that might be a 'trigger'? A lot of species react to water changes because it simulates rain which means there will be plenty of water to swim around in for the babies..I wouldn't know if that were true for bolivians or not. J/W if there was anything you noticed. Whether a w/c or a certain type of food that might correspond with all the spawnings.
Grats again. I'll be sitting here in my chair of envy.. =P
