Filtration System Change Question.

by bacrosslin

As of now i have a kinda crappy filter for my 55gal., only 200gph. I am going to purchase a Emperor 400 soon. My question is do i need to keep my old filter operational until the bacteria is established on the new filters bio wheel to keep my tank from crashing? I am pretty sure i will need to but would like to make sure.

Wouldn't be a bad idea.

Yes, keep it going. If you have no use for the old filter, I would just keep it on the tank. Extra filtration is never a bad thing. It will help you out in the long run as well. When you have to clean your filters you can clean one, one week and the other the next. So you always have a filter running. I vote for keeping the filter on the tank.

Oh and now that I see it's a cichlid tank. They actually need extra filtration because they produce a higher bio-load than other fish.
