I'm real new to plants, but in short, what would cause the mature leaves of a Hygro Willow to turn brown and die prematurely? I know it probably depends on many factors, but in general, there is plenty of new leaf growth, but after reaching something close to maturity they turn brown right away. Perhaps this is a common indicator of something that I should look into first?

You might need to consider dosing with ferts. All the databases I've searched on ''care'' for Hygrophila angustifolia say it needs a ''nutrient rich'' environment. Some have even said it may need lots of nitrate...
I would advise that you use something like seachem flourish or something instead of dodging water changes, cause I know YOU wouldn't do that. lol
Some say high light and some say moderate is fine, but most say that care is ''easy''..whatever that means.

It's just my black thumb....now all the plants are dying. I've got 2 watts per gallon, plant substrate, plant food, co2 and nothing is doing well.
Let's hear it for plastic.

Think you could post some pictures of the dying plants Z? What kinda light are you giving them? 6700k-ish? also don't ask me to explain this but the smaller and deeper a tank is (I can't grow anything in my 5gal with a 15w 50/50 light on it anymore except anubias) the more light you're gonna need. Can't remember what tank you said this was in...

stick with anubias plants, these plants are hardy, need low light, and though they are slow growers, in time, the plants will tank over your entire tank

If you first put plants in the tank it is best to take fish out of the tank, and overdose on co2, so your plants grow quickly, then add fish back and lower co2 levels.
As for why they might be dying, I read that you shouldnt add any additional nutrient, except for plant substarte untill about 8 weeks.... dont know why?
