ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW I CAN IMPROVE ON MY NEW SETUP?

you can get live plants. Just go for thick leaf ones. Find some that your fish don't mess with too much. I know my amazon swords do very well. Java fern also does good.

Plants that will go well with cichlids, in my experience are usually in the nubias familily
anubias congensis (congo anubias)
anubias lanceolata (lance anubias)
anubias nana (dwarf anubias)
there's also a kind of aquatic fern that attches itself to rocks that looks awesome
it's called Bolbitis Heudeloti
you could probably get away with some crypts too (cryptocorynes)
