big on the bottom..............little on the top.......lol sounds silly, but it's no different than stacking rocks in the front yard............make sure you take the bottom {base rocks} and burry em into the substrate and have them sit on the bottom glass of the tank.........that will keep current, fish, verts or whatever from undermineing them and causeing a collapse ..............also rock onto of the substrate can cause "dead" spots were nitrates and nasty things like to live and cause havoc on the ecosystem.................

Very carefully.... I use the wiggle back and forth method. If i wiggle it and it doesnt budge than the fish aint knocking it over. Like snowboss said make sure your bottom rocks are burried under the gravel cause if you have cichlids they like to dig.

yeah you have to do the wiggle meathod haha but as long as they dont slip off and fall you will be fine. what i did with mine was build the rock stack outside the tank first to see what would work and where then i rebuilt it in the tank.
check out the rocks in my tank.

i use egg crate under my substrate... so once a little edge or point hits a square it goes nowhere... and yeah... big and heavy in the bottom, little on the top... but i like to make like say... a bunch of caves by stacking them random, and makeing like tables with they... you know... look at my tank...

rcgman, looks really nice (anytime I see your tank, I always give your tank 8)...one question: do you use silicone on the rocks, and if so, what type of silicone, brand?
I plan to redo the right side of my tank with slate or granite, my only issue is what type of silicone or adhesive should I use
thanks for the above info
