uhhh.... i would boil it for a day or so. when the water becomes all brown, empty it out and put new in. keep doing this until the water is clear. Then it will be ready for your tank

okay, this could take a while :P, any suggestions for new lighting, like a hood that has more than one bulb fixture?

get yourself some glass tops they are super cheap i paid 20 for two of them for my 55gal
you can get them from here
http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/p ... 3790&rel=1
then start looking around ebay and stuff and you can find sum nice fixtures. like i said i got mine off there and it is a T5 HO 54w x 4 42" and they were not much more than 100 or 120 i think.

Dr Fosters & Smith has great plants, check out: Live Aquaria (google it)
anacharis and wisteria are two excellent background plants. Each use moderate lighting and are easy to care for. I prefer to go with the anubias for this plant is hardy, easy and low light. The Anubias Hastofolia, even though it is a mid-ground plant, it can be used as a background plant for it gets over 12" tall.
hope this helps
