Aquarium stores often have high output lights that can be ganged together. They're about 1.5 inches wide I think. Then you can screw them on under a hood.
You have a plastic cheap top right?
I'd remove the top and go with something new.
I just got the hardware store ones and looked for a good compact arrangement. It was cheap and when you have to replace the bulbs every 8-10 months as you do with all flourescents it costs like $4-$6 bucks a bulb. Fancy high output bulbs for aquariums cost like $45-$75 a bulb.
I'd want to have 4 bubs of this kind going the length of the tank for your 30 gallon.
I put a thick African cloth over mine for asthetics.
With this you could grow african sword, java fern, java moss, all the different kinds of anubias, and others.
I've been trying with high ouput lights and the plants aren't growing any better thanthey did when I used the 40 watt shop lights with plant bulbs.
live plants turning yellow, and dieing quickly?

lol now when people were saying how planted tanks could get expensive, I know what they mean. I was having an idea of putting my fishies in a smaller tank for about a week and totoaly redoing the tank with maybe new gravel, canister filter (which is better Rena or fluval) and I found a light that has to places for bulbs is that alright? Then set them up let it cycle, add some ottos and SAES and maybe a pleco and then my old fish back. O ya and I found bog wood but they said it would change the colour of the water? Can I put it in a big tupper wear container with water for like 2 weeks to get rid of whatever makes the water brown?

boil the wood over and over... that will eliminate the leaching faster, also carbon and frequient water chandes will help out with it to.

and that is for a 42" fixture

boiling the wood over and over does eliminate the tannis in the wood which cause the water to turn brown.
what I did with my assorted driftwoods was, even before I set up my tank, I pre-soaked the wood pieces in a bucket of tap water for several days, I think I did it for like 7 days if I remember right. Every day I would throw the water out and put more water in the bucket for the water would turn dirty-like/brownish.
so if you want it the fast way, boil it; if you want to take your time, bucket of water over several days.
hope this helps

if you do all of that you are going to have to start you cycle all over again mind you this time it should cycle a little quicker.
But just be aware of that
