I got my brush algae to stop growing by massivly cleaning the tank. I removed all live plants, wood, and rocks, I bleached the equipment and even most of the wood and rocks with dilute bleach solution(rinse rinse rinse) and I cleaned the filters. I also added a product called Phosguard to my canister filter via a media bag, but I don't know if that did much.
I think the major cleaning of the gravel including the removal and replacement of the UG filters was the main thing. I also read somwhere that acidic water promotes the growth of this algae and my 100 gallon would trend toward acidic when I waited too long to do a major cleaning.
All I know is that after the last major clean and with the rise of the pH to 7.5 or higher by adding fresh dechlorinated tap water (my tap water is pH 8) the algae didn't come back, and the little that was left didn't grow for over 6 months.
Good luck!
