Crawfish or electric blue lobster

by fish20085028

I wanted to know if anyone had info on whether either one of these would coexist with african cichlids(auratus, kenyi, bumblebee, and jewel) They are about 3" in length. They are in a 55 gallon setup with about 12 fish total. I am not trying to waste money or hurt my cichlids that I love so dearly.

I have been keeping Blue Crayfish(clarkii) for 3 years. I introduced a large crayfish (4.5")in a 55 gallon with Africans cichlids 3-4 inches in size and have kept them with jewels. Occassionally a fish will peck at him or he will unsuccesfully try to grasp a fish which is like watching somebody trying to catch a butterfly with a bulldozer . Hes doing well and the sand seems much cleaner with him to disturb the mulm and detrious settled on top. It is important to have some kind space that he can hide in that the fish CANT get into. Like a gap between slates just barely big enough to squeeze into so that when he molts they dont tear him to shreds. I just posted an old picture of two that were in a tank with jewels. They were getting ready to fight. They like to rip each others claws off but its rare that they succeed.

Good Idea to start with a plain crayfish.Sometimes they sell them at petstores as feedercrayfish for a buck.I have also caught my own they are pretty easy to find in any stormditch or little creek.

when I had mine I started out with the crawfish that you can buy for like 2.99 just to make sure that nothing would happen to him. I was going to wait about a month and get the electric blue crawfish, but I just liked this regular one so much, that I just ended up keeping him.

I forgot to mention that they are good climers and i have seen them climb out of tanks many time. Twice i have found a crayfish on my kitchen floor! So make sure your top is closed and the lid is shut. Its not a bad idea to put driftwood or rocks that come out of the water so they crafish can get out of the water. I dont really know why they do it except for low oygen which isnt really a problem in a fish tank.I have often seen them out of the water on pond banks.

Just getting back with you guys on the 2 crayfish, they lasted maybe 2 days. They were running for dear life, shells and claws were everywhere. Thanks for the advice to buy the $1.99 crayfish instead of the electric blue $24.99.
