There is a sort of brown algae like stuff that is common in new tanks. I actually don't know much about it, but there was a post about it on here recently.

Water changes immediately, but really for long term aquatic life to live you need something to break down the waste, either benificial bacteria or live plants

It would be much easier to advise you on your tanks problems if we had some background information. Such as what size tank, what fish, how many fish etc.

My tank is 10 gallons, I have a fancy goldfish(just got rid of two other goldfish), 4 tetras, 1 guppy fry in a breeder box, 2 small apple snails, 1 medium apple snail. I have the breeder box, a decorative vase(as seen above), a bubbling volcano, and 4 fake plants plants. Oh!!!, and a ghost shrimp! I have a Aqueon 10 power filter, just replaced the filter last Wednesday. An a 50w heater, the bubbler, and a automatic feeder. Does this help? The fancy goldfish seems to be pooping A LOT. Is this due to over feeding? My dad took care of my tank for the weekend, and forgot about the auto-feeder, he also "accidentally" put about 20 pellets in the breeder box with the guppy. I got the snails this weekend, and they have already reduced the algae. Please help, I am new to fish-keeping, and am so far enjoying it. This all started with that guppy fry... lol
