Yes, apparently you can. There are others on here who have actually done it, so i'll let them weigh in on exactly what type to look for. Obviously anything with any fragrances, dyes, or the clumping stuff would need to be avoided.

I've done it. My 55 gallon tank has a kitty litter substrate.
Here's why I did it: http://www.thekrib.com/Plants/Fertilize ... jamie.html
So I bought 25 pound bags of Special Kitty (R) brand cat litter from Walmart. It cost $3 to $4 per bag and the only ingredient is baked ground clay.

Here are some photos of my tank. The gray kitty litter is from Cleveland, Ohio, and the white kitty litter is from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Different regions have different colored clay.
I've moved twice since May, so here's the tank in each setup:

The reason why you can't see many fish is because that is a four foot long tank and the fish are less than one inch long each. Here is a close up of the fish. This is a male and female Elassoma gilberti: http://gallery.nanfa.org/v/members/Eric ... ewsIndex=1
and this is a scaled photo to let you see how big they are

That is a fully grown male and the scale marking is one inch.

I have a 75 gallon tank, fish only with live rock , I only have four fish and had to recently put in a divider because my gold striped maroon clown has picked at my yellow tang until it has no fins left, just wander if the tangs fins will grow back and what else I might need in my tank, like crabs, snails or other fish that would be compatible ...now have yellow tang and pajama cardinal on one side and speckled damsel with clown on other side of divider, any suggestions would be great!
