Water Change during Cycle?

by HeidiG

My readings are as follows:

3/30 ammonia 1, nitrite 1, nitrate 7
4/1 ammonia .5, nitrite 5, nitrate 10

Should water changes occur during a cycle?

Thanks!

I would say no unless you have fish in there with the cycle. If so, make small water changes throughout the cycle.

Yes, we have fish. So small changes how often?

I'd say daily so you can keep the cycle going and give the fish a source of fresh water. But not too much water. You don't want to kill the cycle. I wonder if anybody disagrees. That is how i see it tho.

The levels read the same this morning and we lost another Molly last night. How much of a water change should I do?

I would say just in my opinion do not do a water change in your case. as long as the ammonia doesn't get higher that 1 the fish are going to be fine. but if it gets much higher then def. agree with jdak and would say small water changes.

Large, frequent water changes are necessary when cycling a tank with fish in. Until your colony of bacteria builds up, this is the only thing keeping your water clean and your fish healthy. Big water changes will not stall the cycling process. The bacteria only need trace amounts of nitrates/nitrites/ammonia to grow and thrive.

Thanks. When you say large - how much, how often?

I would say 20% every other day, but that's just me
