mating featherfin catfish

by robert95687

I have just moved my featherfins to my new larger tank and I was watching them preform strange rituals after I shut off the lights. Has anyone ever heard of mating these catfish? Any ideas on the specifics? I am wondering if there is any way I can help them to procreate. Thanks for all the help. No jokes about fish-pornos please.

feather fin..??

oh... you probably have some synodontis euptorus(sp?)...

yeah... those guys aren't going to spawn in your tank by themselves... they are parasite spawners... i'm not sure about the details, but i know when i had synodontis multipictactus and pseudotropheus damasoni, they would wait untill the damasoni would spawn, sneak in and eat thier eggs, and replace the eaten eggs with thier own eggs...

then after a couple of days, thier eggs hatch in the host mouth, eat the other eggs or whatevers in there, and swim out happily...

i recomend putting those guys in with a colony of yellow labs (electric yellows)... those guys spawn like crazy...

That is very interesting, I do have one electric yellow that I put in with them in the new 200 gallon tank. My electric yellow is only about 1.5 inches long. I am not sure if it is male or female yet either. This is my community tank. Do you think there will be any problems with the two cichlids together in the 200 gallon tank? I have about 30 other fish and so far everyone is doing well and is happy and feeding fine, no signs of stress.

well... i would put another 10 yellow labs in there to start off a colony... if not... that one mbuna is going to start stressing your other fish... if you have 10+ they will only chase and fight with other yellow labs...

what other type of cichlid do you have in there...

and try to get syno cats that don't get that large...

check out synodontis petrocola, or synodontis multipictactus... they don't grow as fast or as huge as feather fins, and don't scutte along the bottom... these fish do swim...
