Can you over filter?

by TigerTaylor8906

Ive been in the hobby about a year, still have a lot to learn. I have a 30 gallon goldfish/koi tank, I currently have about 45 gallons worth of filters on it. I know these fish are messy, Ive had them for a while, is it possible to over filter if i added a larger filter? It seems like it could use more filtration. Thanks in advance.

As long as there are ''dead spots'' within the aquarium where water movement is minimal so fish can ''rest', no. If you walk past the tank one day and one of your goldfish is pinned against the front glass I think its safe to say you're overfiltering. Also if you have some fish you think might not be safe around a very strong intake consider getting a pre-filter sponge. I upgraded my filtration a month or so ago and lost a couple of tetras overnight to my very strong filter intake (i have an aquaclear 70 in a 16gal tank).

I have seen filtration up to 10L per second (2200L tank :-) )
