A Salvini Cichlid protecting eggs in an African tank.

by bricklover

How did this happen?
The last of my south american cichlids that I could not find a home for.
I converted the tank 6 months ago. I keep the PH at 8.2 and Salvini was living peacefully among the Africans.
Today I noticed that the Salvini colors were much more vibrant, and black much deeper. Protecting eggs on a sloped and vertical surface of a large rock
sitting high up in the tank.
The Salvini is hovering over the eggs and chasing away everyone that comes near them.
I assume that the Salvini is female & that eggs are hers.
Unless she is taking on the role for another.
Here is a list of the tank mates:
3 yellow zebra
3 yellow lab
3 blue zebra
5 orange Zebra
2 blue cobalt
3 electric blue peacock
2 chilumba zebra
1 rosy peacock
1 yellow peacock
1 red peacock
1 electric blue johannii
3 blue ahli
3 jewels > blood red, red, turquoise

What should I do?
Get a breeder tank? Move rock closer to gravel?
For now, I'm going to hurry up and wait.

I doubt the eggs are fertile. All of your fish are mouth brooders. They just spawn differently. She probably laid the eggs herself. Watch them to see if they turn white. If they do they are infertile. If they start to develop spots on them and stay a nice cream/tan color they are OK. They will be hybrids and you wont be able to sell any of them.

If they are OK, a breeders net is not so good because those cichlids will suck the fry right thru the net. What I do is as they become free swimming I put them in a small tank and feed them baby brine shrimp.

If they hatch I will give you more instructions if you decide to keep them.

Thanks Dizz for your reply.
Tonight there are no eggs on the rock, but she is still standing guard. No sign of fry.
Her blues are bluer than ever.

The eggs were a tan color.

Would turning off daylight /moonlighting have made a difference?
