29 gallon discus tank

by Mike0372983

I know that discus prefer to be in groups of six or more and to have that you need at least a 55 gallon tank. But would they be fine in a 29 gallon tank. My water quality isnt awesome but it's clean and there is a fair amount of plants. Just want to know if anyone would think that they are worth the money and if they could some how get in my tank... any advice about discus too would be great! Anyways thanks.

They should be ok. I had two in a 46 gallon an they did awesome. I would make sure that your water quality is almost perfect before getting a discus though. They like that low pH.

So if I removed the fish from the tank, and cleaned the gravel like crazy, and did daily water changes for about 2 weeks. Eventually the water would be really good quality and then I could buy 2 discus and put my neon tetras back in. I would also buy an internal filter probably and maybe a sponge filter. I'm not sure if I should take the risk..

Discus are kind of expensive. If you aren't sure you can properly care for it, I wouldn't risk it, but then I don't really have the money to spend on a discus in the first place ^^;

They get 6-8 inches long. I'm probably going to wait till I get my 60 gallon before getting some Diskus. I have a 30 gallon too that is full of plants and I think it's a little small.

I'd get at least 3 regardless of the size of the tank as the social factor will trump the tank size factor.

Also, make sure you can get the proper food for them. Gumbii mentioned something in the prepared food catagory you can feed them in the other post about Diskus, but I always fed them live blood/black worms which have to be bought once or twice a week depending on how fresh they are when bought and how well you rinse them every day. You have to keep these worms in the fridge too.

I will probably wait for my bigger tank too, I still have a while unill that but I can wait. Also by the time I get my bigger tank I will have more experience and they willl probably turn out better and healthier.

Hey Mike. Wasn't that you who was showing us your planted tank with the clover?

If not, I would look on the internet and see what kind of plant scapes people with diskus provide their fish. There has to be some areas that are big enough and dark and enclosed enough for them to hide for them to feel comfortable. When they're comfortable they will be less skittish and want to display themselves more.

Mike. I see your tank for the first time. Very nice. I like the round stones, sand, and live plants. I'd say to let those plants grow in for a while till they create canyons and caves and then you could add 3 small diskus. If they got too big after a few months you could just get a 60 gallon used for almost nothing I bet.

If a store near you is selling diskus check to see what they are feeding them. You'd hate to have some at home starving or malnourished because there is no good food to be found.
