About Yourself: I live and work in Niagara Falls, Canada. My boyfriend and I have had this 30 gallon up for two years with an over hanging filter but had a lot of algae. We recently tested out this new system and saw great results within days. It wasn't too expensive and required just a little bit of pvc, an extra tank and some plexiglass. The pump was the most expensive thing. The whole thing might be overkill, but it's been way easier to maintain and it seems good practice for the salt water tank we hope to set up in the future.
Advice: Look into sump filtration. It needs more space but it has sure been beneficial for me. Check out the L.A. fishguy on youtube for an interesting opinion on caring for fishtanks. ;)
Fish Kept: I'm currently housing one Malawi cichlid (cobalt blue/female??) in a community and yes I know it's ill advised. She's grown to about 2 inches and the pack of 5 red minor tetras keeps her out of hiding and more active. I have a sixth tetra currently regrowing some fins in the reservoir. Other than her and two other initial losses, the fish seem to have found a balance. We've just added three guppies and have had some hiccups there. Two seem quite happy there now, with 1 return to the pet store, and a beautiful teal recuperating in the refugium with the tetra.
Plants Kept: I also have some plants. A couple of wendtii, a cobomba, and one other of which I don't know the type. I'm hoping to add more in the future.
Tank Size: 30
Description: My average 30 gallon tank is being filtered by a self- separated 10 gallon sump. The sump is divided by plexiglass into 3 chambers. The first receives the water through a hand-made trickle filter, which could use some tweeking, flows into the second, refugium chamber and on into the third. There a Rio 2100 pumping approx. 300 gallons per hour sends the water back up 3 feet. It's been a lot clearer since we added the 10g sump in place of hang-on filter. I also find it much easier to maintain as the higher water flow discourages algae growth.

Advice: Cycle your tank befor adding fish, and always make sure the fish you are getting are compatible. About 1 inch of fish will occupy 1 gallon of your tank. Over stocking is fine in a community tank, but in a planted tank it is better to use less fish due to the room that the plants need. Feed your fish as much as they can consume in 2 minnuts and when adding new plant be sure to make sure your tank reaches their requirments for lighting and nutrients. As far as I would think choosing a planted tank over a freshwater is a better but more pricey choice, one thing it makes the tank look more natural and most community fish would like that, and as long as you keep all the dead plnat leaves out of the tank your water quality will become better. Choose what you want carefully, because if you get stuff that you dont really like, it's just a waste of money. Good luck to all the hobbyists and have fun!

(Picture was taken with a cell phone so please excuse the fuzzy quality)
This fish tank is my 55 gallon bar. This fish tank is part 2 of a 2 part wet bar in the downstairs of my house. Atop this fish tank is counter top and behind is a full bar. The insides of this fish tank include fish, plants, beer wine and liquor bottles. There are mixed drinks (gravel) and even a spilled cocktail. NOT PICTURED HERE: there is a tap built into the top of the bar and a glass that has been perm. glued down with a constant flow of pond water pumped through the tap and into the glass that then falls back through the small hole back into the tank. One of the most eye catching tanks I've ever owned because of the setup and environment around the tank as well as inside the tank.

About Yourself: My name is Andy Brady and I'm the owner of a political website. Working on a website from home gives me plenty of time to sit around with my fish relaxing. I'm in the process of building a 240, and 160 gallon tanks for my house. These tanks will not be part of the bar, but hopefully they'll still be cool and show my style! www.Kabliga.com
Advice: Have fun, try to come up with ideas that you haven't seen before, put your own personality into your fish tank. Whatever you do, don't copy your fish tank straight from someone else, then you wont be quite as in touch with it and it will be less amusing to you!
Fish Kept: Cichlid, catfish, placo.
Plants Kept: plants whom I don't remember the name of.
